Should You Repair or Replace Your Concrete Driveway?
Quick answer
Small, thin cracks on a level slab can often be sealed. Wide cracks, sunken sections, crumbling edges, and water pooling in several spots usually mean the driveway should be replaced — most of those problems start in the ground under the concrete, not on the surface.
It's the first question most homeowners ask, and the honest answer is: it depends on how far the damage has gone. Some problems can be patched. Others keep coming back no matter how many times you seal them. Here's how to tell the difference.
When a repair can work
Small, thin cracks — the kind you can barely fit a coin into — can often be sealed. If the slab is still level, the edges aren't crumbling, and water isn't sitting on the surface, sealing buys you time. It won't make the driveway new, but it can slow the damage.
When replacement usually makes more sense
- Wide cracks — gaps wide enough to catch a finger usually mean the slab has moved, and the crack will return even after it's filled.
- Sunken sections — when part of the driveway drops, the ground under it has shifted or washed out. Patching the surface doesn't fix what's underneath.
- Crumbling edges and corners — concrete that breaks apart at the edges has often lost its base along the sides.
- Water pooling in several spots — standing water works under the slab and keeps spreading the damage.
- A patchwork of old repairs — if you've sealed the same cracks more than once, you're often better off starting fresh.
Why the ground matters more than the surface
Most driveway problems start under the concrete, not on top of it. When we replace a driveway, we look at the base, the soil, and the drainage first. That's what keeps the new slab from repeating the same story a few years later.
